Established in 2012, Derby Rims began because Ray, who many also call "derby", bought some carbon fiber rims for his trail bike. But he he was disappointed in the loss in stability and cornering traction of those common narrower 25mm inside-width carbon rims compared to the latest 30mm inside aluminum rims he had been riding. 

Derby-Ray liked the lighter carbon rims for climbing weight and improved ground tracking and more precise bike handling advantages from less rotational and less un-sprung wheel weight. So he found a very small start-up factory offering manufacturing to his specifications, and he began to design higher traction and much more durable WIDE rims with far improved tubeless air and tire retention safety. 

Derby Rims became the world's first carbon fiber rims strong enough for aggressive mountain bike riders when introduced on the most popular mountain bike social media forum in the Summer of 2013. 

And a business was born. 

Quickly orders became back-ordered for up to 5 months, the business broke-even in 3 months, the factory expanded to meet the growing demand, and quickly nearly every new rim model by well known brands and new brands both of carbon and aluminum closely copied some or all of Ray's design features.
